Worship in the time of COVID-19

The COVID-19 Pandemic has brought forth new challenges for everyone. One of these challenges is how to control the virus spread within the worship communities. How can we worship safely? How can we meet with the people in our worship communities? How can we keep our traditions and celebrations without them posing a danger to us and our families? We can begin by identifying risk zones within our temples. In this example, we designate three types of zones:

  1. High Risk Zone Type 1 are those spaces with inadequate ventilation and air circulation and a higher than normal use, such as, offices, confessionals, public bathrooms, and the chapel.

  2. High Risk Zone Type 2 are those spaces with a high occupant density, such as, the sacristy.

  3. High Risk Touch Surfaces are those surfaces that are subject to a higher contact frequency, such as the lecterns, the altar, pew armrests, railings, and doorknobs, to name a few.

The purpose of identifying critical zones within our temples is to lower exposure to the disease. Targeted cleaning is one of the most effective ways to control the virus spread. Once zones are identified, a detailed targeted cleaning plan can be developed. Cleaning crews can then be trained to focus their attention to specific areas making the most effective use of resources.

It is important to have a plan!
